I’m Bobby Lee, a musician, DJ, record collector and occasional writer, from Sheffield, England. I released my debut album Shakedown in Slabtown in 2020 and followed it up with Origin Myths (Tompkins Square) in 2021. My collaboration with LA based songwriter Mia Doi Todd, Walking With Trees, has just been released. I am currently working on a follow up to Origin Myths and have a UK tour scheduled for November and December.

¿Tu primer disco comprado? ¿Cómo y dónde?
What is your first album bought? How and where?
The Strokes – “Is This It” on CD from HMV in Sheffield with a Christmas gift voucher. I was exactly the right age (13) for this when it landed and it immediately made all those terrible post-Britpop and mall-rock bands seem utterly pointless. Through interviews and magazine articles, they hipped me to a lot of music like The VU, Patti Smith, Television, Modern Lovers and NY Dolls that has stayed with me. And they looked COOL. That meant a lot when the alternative was ¾ length skate shorts and Slipknot hoodies. They might have been a bunch of New York socialites and male models but I’ll take it.

What album is your «guilty pleasure»?
I’m not really a believer in “guilty pleasures”. That said, I’m a huge Yacht Rock fan which a lot of people would probably consider embarrassing. There’s no irony involved but I do love how it’s the antithesis to all the rock snob approved post punk of the same era. Albums like Toto IV and Boz Scaggs’ Silk Degrees will always be criminally unhip but pick them up from the next bargain bin you dig and I guarantee they’ll get more time on your turntable than that private press free jazz reissue you just blew £40 on.
Realmente no creo en los «placeres culpables». Dicho esto, soy un gran fanático de Yacht Rock, lo que probablemente mucha gente consideraría vergonzoso. Vinyl, although I never ditched my CDs. I mostly buy vinyl, but still occasionally buy compilations and box sets on CD, and I can’t pass up used CDs as they can be had for a steal.

The last LP I bought was Mouth Painter’s new album “Tropicale Moon” and I picked up the Ian Matthews twofer Valley Hi/Some Days… on CD in a charity shop recently which I’m enjoying a lot.

Bobby Charles – Bobby Charles
Loose limbed folk rock featuring members of The Band and the extended Bearsville family. “I Must Be In A Good Place Now” can usually knock me out of even the deepest funk. During the long, cold English winters, this album is a good substitute for a summer afternoon swimming in rivers and drinking beers in the wild with friends.

Easy Rider, Fast Times at Ridgemont High or The Wicker Man came close but Bruce Langhorne’s Hired Hand soundtrack is the one. Sparse, primitive and dusty.

Where do you listen to the most music?
When I had a 9-5 job, I listened on my commute and at my desk but now it’s a mixture of when driving (I only passed my test last year so I’m pretty late to the pleasures of cruising around on my own with the music blasting) and when walking the dog/cooking. NRPS’ The Adventures of Panama Red is a dog walking favourite.

What is the record you have heard the most during the pandemic, or to resist confinement?
Jeffrey Silverstein’s You Become The Mountain has barely left my ears/tape deck since I first heard it last year. A beautiful mix of cosmic country and ambient new age sounds. Another one that might elicit a few smirks from the purists is The Sonic Ranch by Midland. It’s a collection of their early recordings which knocks a bit of the polish off their more recent work and shows them at their boot scootin’ best. If The Eagles or Gary Stewart aren’t dirty words to you it’s worth a try.
You Become The Mountain, de Jeffrey Silverstein, apenas ha salido de mis oídos / de mi lector de casetes, desde que la escuché por primera vez el año pasado. Shirley and Dolly Collins – Anthems in Eden
I find it hard to muster too much patriotic feeling, given Britain’s current horror show and previous colonial exploits, but Shirley (and Dolly’s) work connects to a deeper sense of place and being which does resonate with me. I’m all for scrapping the monarchy and putting Shirley on our bank notes. Dolly’s organ and David Munrow’s early music arrangements place this in some pre-rock Arcadia.

As a total GP devotee, it’s not easy choosing just one but Gilded Palace… is the perfect distillation of everything that made him great. Loose, groovy, fuzzed out, romantic, killer songs.

The perfect amalgam of British folk rock and the burgeoning singer songwriter movement. I’d be happy to write one song half as good as “Withered and Died” or “Cavalry Cross” and Richard’s guitar playing is so crisp and uncluttered.

Blew my face off when I first heard it. It has everything I’m looking for in a jazz record; solid grooves, far out soloing and moments of pure beauty which collapse into absolute chaos, then somehow flashes of melody begin to emerge again. It’s every bit as staggeringly psychedelic as “Anthem of the Sun” or “Sister Ray”.
Me voló la cara cuando lo escuché por primera vez. Tiene todo lo que busco en un disco de jazz; ritmos sólidos, solos lejanos y momentos de pura belleza que colapsan en un caos absoluto, y luego, de alguna manera, comienzan a emerger destellos de melodía. Dadawah – Peace and Love
I’m not as deep into reggae as some of the other genres I’ve covered here, but this heavily psychedelic dubbed out roots album is the sweet spot I gravitate towards. If you dig Heart of The Congos this is a great next step. Willie Lindo’s guitar playing on this album is wild. Not the usual choppy, offbeat rhythmic playing you’d expect in reggae, it’s fluid and freewheeling, closer to west coast rock than anything else.
No estoy tan metido en el reggae como algunos de los otros géneros que he cubierto aquí, pero este álbum de raíces muy psicodélico es el punto óptimo hacia el que gravito. Si te gusta Heart of The Congos, este es un gran paso siguiente. La guitarra de Willie Lindo en este álbum es salvaje.
