My name is Maya de Vitry, I am a songwriter, musician, singer, producer, barista, gardener… I have lived in Nashville, Tennessee for 7 years, but I was born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. My first touring project was a band called The Stray Birds – that band was active from 2010-2018. Since 2018, I have been making solo albums, as well as co-writing with other artists and singing and playing on other people’s records. I co-produced my most recent album (Violet Light) with Ethan Jodzieiwicz, and we recorded it in our basement during the pandemic. I love plants, I love to garden, I love to hike and spend time outside in nature. I also love languages – I have actually been studying Spanish a lot in the past several years!

¿10 Discos de los cuales nunca te separarías?

10 albums that you would never part with and why?

Kind of Blue, Miles Davis

I love songs, I love words. But when I just want to immerse myself in music itself, not be distracted by words and stories, this is some music I definitely want to hear.

Tom Waits – Mule Variations

This is an album I need to hear every once in a while. I love the stories. I love the instrumentation. I love the tones so, so much. I love the way Tom Waits delivers his words, the phrasing, the way he sings… especially «Pony», «Picture in a Frame», and «Hold On».

Iris DeMent – Infamous Angel

This one takes me to my childhood. These were the songs my mom was listening to, the songs I heard when I was riding in the backseat as a little kid.

Bob Dylan – Blood on the Tracks

This album transports me too. I didn’t really rebel from the music my parents loved. I loved the music they loved. Some of these are songs that I’ve heard my dad play and sing around the house (he plays guitar, and lots of string instruments) when I was a kid.

Dolly Parton – Greatest Hits

It’s gotta be a greatest hits album, so that I can listen to «Islands in the Stream» and «9 to 5» and «I Will Always Love You» on the same album… I love Dolly’s music. A lot.

Nina Simone – Silk and Soul

I absolutely adore Nina Simone. She is a true communicator with her voice. Every word, every syllable matters… I have learned so much by listening to her sing.

Alison Krauss & Robert Plant – Raising Sand

This album, the song choices, the production, the vocal delivery, the vocal blend… I love it. I have listened to this so many times since it came out in…2007? Yeah I love this album.

Billie Holiday – Billie Holiday

When I was just starting to have the courage to sing, to use my own voice, it was Billie Holiday who inspired me more than anyone else. Her singing reached right into my heart.

Willie Nelson – Words Don’t Fit The Picture

I’d have to include a Willie album in this collection of 10… when I get home from work (I work at a cafe, I’m on my feet a lot), I often just want to sit and listen to Willie Nelson songs for a while before I do anything else. I love how simple and straightforward the instrumentation is on his albums – so supportive of the direct and wise and playful and brilliant songs.

Adam Hurt – Earth Tones

Solo banjo music – it’s soothing to listen to, and lets my mind be at peace. It’s hard to choose just 10, but I would definitely want another instrumental album, so this would be my choice 🙂

_________

Miles Davis: Kind of Blue

Tom Waits – Mule Variations

Bob Dylan – Blood on the Tracks

Dolly Parton – Greats Hits

Tiene que ser un álbum de grandes éxitos, para poder escuchar «Islands in the Stream» y «9 to 5» y «I Will Always Love You» en el mismo álbum… Me encanta la música de Dolly. Mucho.

Nina Simone – Silk and Soul

Adoro absolutamente a Nina Simone.

Alison Krauss y Robert Plant – Rasing Sand

Me encanta. ¿2007? Sí, me encanta este álbum.

Billie Holiday – Billie Holiday

Willie Nelson -Words Don’t Fit The Picture

Adam Hurt – Earth Tones
