ENTREVISTA A CAIRA PARAVEL

¿Tu primer disco comprado?

What is your first album bought?

My grandfather was an antiques dealer, and had one of the largest record collections in the US. In my infancy, I lived next door to the shop and would sweep up in exchange for records and comics. I’ve always gravitated towards the 60s, my first favorite song was Bobby Vinton’s «Mr. Lonely». Every time it came on the radio I would sob, my heart breaking in sadness. I found it so terribly sad but at the same time wonderful. One time it played while I was sweeping up, and I had to run all the way home to my Mum for consolation!!

What album is your «guilty pleasure»?

There are no guilty pleasures

No hay Guilty Pleasures

¿Vinilo o CD?/Vinyl or CD?

¿Tu última compra?/Your last purchase?

My last purchase was a while ago, probably that France Gall LP, which I purchased from a seller in Japan. I love buying CDs too, last one I bought was Nancy Priddy / You’ve Come This Way Before a few years ago

You’ve Come This Way Before hace unos años.

¿Tu disco para animarte?

Your favorite album to cheer you up?

Sweet / Desolation Boulevard

¿Tu disco cuando estás nostalgica?

Your album when you are nostalgic?

¿Qué sonaría en tu funeral?

What would sound at your funeral?

Nico’s Desert Shore:»The Falconer» is how I imagine it feels to enter into death. Since everyone in my family can sing like angels, I would love to hear them sing the harmonies in «My Only Child» during the ceremony. The pure honesty of «Afraid» would play as folks leave. «All That Is My Own» as my soul ascends with giddy glee, and when I visit my most cherished loved ones later that evening in their dreams. Meet me on the desert shore… Meet me on the desert shore…

What is the record you have heard the most during the pandemic, or to resist confinement?

There was a period whenJohn Lennon/Plastic Ono Band was on repeat. It’s been interesting how music has taken on a whole new or deeper meaning to me through this ordeal. I’ve made a lot of thematic playlists that give me a nice, dark laugh whenever I need one.

10 albums that you would never part with and why?

If I were being honest, the top 10 would be completely taken up by my French LPs, because they’re so hard to come by here! I suppose if I could only keep, let’s say, two French records then…

1968 / France Gall: I don’t usually buy albums online because it feels like cheating! But after years of searching I knew I’d never find this in the wild, so I finally broke down and bought a beautiful copy you’d have to fight me for.

Francoise / Francoise Hardy: My favorite of all her albums, in regular rotation.

Tyrannosaurus Rex:  Prophets, Seers & Sages: The Angels Of The Ages, sometimes records call to me. I was in LA playing a show with Walker Phillips, and while he was digging through recently added, I walked over to the T section and was shocked to actually find this, along with a few other T Rex / Tyrannosaurus Rex LPs and bought them all, much to Walker’s chagrin.

Tyrannosaurus Rex: Prophets, Seers & Sages: The Angels Of The Ages, a veces los registros me llaman.

Which Way You Goin’ Billy? / The Poppy Family: A cherished jewel that I found the same day I got the Tyrannosaurus Rex LPs! What a good day.

Which Way You Goin’ Billy?

Incredible String Band :The 5,000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion. Even though this one could easily be replaced, I would never part with mine because it was the first one added to my collection, and because I carried it with me all the way to the UK to have Robin himself autograph it when I saw him perform at a small cafe in Wales.

Incredible String Band :The 5,000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion.

Mary Hopkin: Postcard

Mose Allison: Mose Allison: One of the few greatest hits in my collection. An absolute gem for a night of cooking and good wine.

Cowboy in Sweden / Lee Hazlewood: It’s hard to pick just one from Lee, but Walker gave this one to me as a Christmas gift, when I knew he’d wanted it for himself for years. It’s a beautiful reminder to sacrifice things we want for the people we care about.

Bobby Gentry / Ode to Billy Joe: I listened to this a lot when Walker and I first started recording Mirror Mirror. We brought 3 records and a Tascam 388 up to a cabin in the woods of Mendocino, and this was one of them.

Folk Roots, New Routes / Shirley Collins & Davy Graham:This record shows that traditional songs can be fun and contemporary and fresh. In fact, that’s the whole point! Each generation passes these songs on to the next in their own way, through the lens of their own time. She’s such an important artist to me, and I always wonder if she would approve of how Tabernacle has carried on the torch of bands like Steeleye Span, and if she would be excited or horrified by what we’ve done to her version of Bad Girl!

What a fantastic interview! I loved your Bobby Vinton story about his song “Mr Lonely.” (a must read) You describe such a lovely variety of music interests. Intriguing many in your family all sing like angels…as your voice is so angelic. And finally what a heartfelt and beautiful choice of music for your funeral….which will not be used for at least 60 years! ;))
