Antes que nada, muchas gracias a Imelda May por su música y por concedernos esta entrevista. Os recordamos que está de gira por nuestro país. Ahí van mis preguntas:
– Todos lo hemos pasado muy mal por la pandemia del Covid. ¿Cómo te afectó la pandemia?
– Muy difícil como todos los demás. Mi madre estaba muy enferma, mi madre se estaba muriendo, así que fue extremadamente difícil. Tuve la suerte de poder verla al final antes de que falleciera. Así que tuve mucha suerte, algunas personas no pudieron hacer eso. ¡Qué introducción a una entrevista!
– La pandemia frenó los planes de muchos artistas. Los directos son uno de tus puntos fuertes, ¿cómo superaste el no poder tocar en directo?
Normalmente habría ido directamente a lanzar mi álbum y salir de gira, pero no pude hacerlo, así que hice cosas que no habría hecho. Estuve muy ocupada, tal vez demasiado ocupada, me lancé a proyectos: publiqué un libro de poesía (A Lick and a Promise) que había estado escribiendo durante algún tiempo, trabajé en el arte (del libro) e hice un documental sobre literatura y música de Irlanda que recientemente ganó un gran premio, que fue genial, llamado Voices of Ireland. Filmé la película «Fisherman’s friends: one and all» en Cornualles con James Purefoy que se estrenará en septiembre. Sí, trabajé en mi álbum, mezclé e hice algunos videos y planeé hacer una gira. Entonces, estaba muy, muy ocupada. Tuve la suerte de tener una salida creativa porque mi creatividad no se detiene, así que necesitaba enfocar mi energía creativa.
– ¿Cómo ves el negocio de la música ahora que finalmente estamos viendo la luz del día?
Creo que el negocio de la música está en un lío. Muchos locales han cerrado. Está de rodillas en este momento, ahora estamos todos en la carretera al mismo tiempo intentando que el público vaya a los conciertos porque los hemos extrañado mucho. Todos aprovechamos para salir de gira, así que ahora es una locura. Esperemos que se equilibre de nuevo ya que ahora mismo es un todo muy loco. Sí, pero es bueno que estemos de vuelta.
– ¿Habrá un disco post pandemia de Imelda May?
Habrá otro álbum, sí, pero no será sobre la pandemia, no quiero escribir sobre eso. Estará centrado en mi vida y no sé qué de irá del próximo álbum. No lo estoy escribiendo en este momento. Solo estoy escribiendo continuamente, pero no necesariamente para un álbum.
– Lo reconozco, en los momentos más duros, la música fue mi salvavidas. Cuando grabas una canción, ¿eres consciente del impacto que tu música puede tener en los oyentes?
No grabo una canción pensando en los demás. No puedo hacer música para la gente porque nunca complacerá a todos y luego vienen demasiadas preguntas y dudas. Debo estar centrada y motivada también, y hacerlo por mí misma de una manera egoísta. Sentir lo que quiero sentir, decir lo que quiero decir y ser honesta con ello. Creo que ésa es la forma en que las cosas conectan con las personas porque, si estoy dispuesta a dar mucho de mí misma, entonces creo que las personas sienten más las cosas y se conecta con su propia verdad, sus propias vidas y su propia historia.
– ¿Qué deben esperar los fans de esta gira? ¿Escucharemos nuevas canciones?
Sí, escucharás nuevas canciones. Escucharás la mayor parte del nuevo álbum porque he estado esperando para interpretar esto en vivo durante tanto tiempo. Normalmente saco un álbum y salgo de gira al mismo tiempo, así que este va con un año de distancia. Así que no puedo esperar para tocar estas nuevas canciones en vivo y hasta ahora la gente las ha recibido muy bien. Quiero que la gente se vaya a casa con alegría en sus corazones. Quiero que te sientas increíble, sientas amor y sientas todas las emociones y te llevaré de viaje a través de este concierto. Toco canciones de álbumes antiguos para que puedas conectarte con ellos y cantar al cielo. Quiero que cuando te vayas a casa te sientas como si estuvieras caminando sobre una nube, ya sabes, todo el camino a casa. Por lo tanto, deben esperar muchas emociones y una gran alegría.
– ¿Te gusta estar de gira durante meses?
Me gusta viajar en movimiento de un lugar a otro. Hay algo maravilloso en ellos, ya sabes, instalamos el escenario en cada lugar y al final de la noche se carga en los camiones y nos vamos de nuevo, así que hay algo increíble en eso. De niña quería unirme al circo, esta es mi versión musical de eso. Hay algo encantador en salir y quedarse fuera de casa, cuando traes lo que necesitas y te conformas viviendo con lo que tienes en una maleta y esas cosas, pero tienes que volver a casa. De lo contrario, te vuelves loco y necesitas volver a la realidad. En la carretera vives en la burbuja del tour. Vives con las personas con las que trabajas durante meses y obviamente necesitas a tu familia. Lo resolvemos llevando a nuestros hijos con nosotros en la carretera. Por supuesto, mi hija se une a mí y luego hay tiempo para volver a casa. A ella le encanta, podemos ver el mundo, pero necesitas realidad. Necesitas irte a casa, normalidad y calma. Así que el equilibrio es lo mejor.
¿Qué es lo más emocionante de vivir en la carretera?
La Música. Estar juntos y llevar música a la gente, esa es la emoción.
– Sé que puede ser una pregunta complicada. ¿Cuáles son tus 5 cantantes favorit@s?
Sí, esa es una pregunta complicada. Tengo tantos cantantes favoritos por todas las razones diferentes que es difícil elegir cinco. Billie Holiday fue una influencia muy temprana por su minimalismo, ya sabes. Y luego Aretha Franklin, por lo contrario. Janis Joplin que, ya sabes, me enseñó a sentir, gritar y chillar… Luke Kelly me enseñó a conectar con la gente y cantar, fue un maravilloso cantante irlandés. Es legendario y me conmueve mucho cada vez que lo escucho. ¿Quién más…? Oh, Dios, son demasiados, mi cabeza está girando. Es una cantidad loca de intérpretes maravillosos. Ella Fitzgerald fue otra, Jeff Buckley, Joe Cocker, Maria Callas a quien escucho con frecuencia, Judy Garland… Quiero decir que hay tantos que podría estar así toda la noche.
– ¿Cuáles son tus películas favoritas sobre el mundo del rock? Vale, te cuento la mía: Phantom of Paradise (1974) de Brian De Palma.
Oh, Dios, no lo sé. Spinal Tap, tiene que ser mi película favorita sobre el rock, es más veraz de lo que jamás imaginaste, lo que es tan divertido. Hay tantas películas increíbles y Phantom of paradise es fantástica. Cada película de David Lynch es fenomenal. Y cada película de Pedro Almodóvar, es uno de mis directores favoritos. Sus películas no son musicales pero inspiraron mi música. La imagen es simplemente hermosa y el color está en la forma de contar las historias.
– Si te queda algo por decir, éste es el momento…
Creo que he dicho más que suficiente y todo lo demás lo diré a través de mi música, mi poesía y en los conciertos. Así que os veré en los conciertos y no puedo esperar a que todos estemos juntos de nuevo. Y me encanta estar en España, así que es una combinación hermosa para mí. Hasta pronto, adiós

First of all, thank you very much for your music and for giving us this interview. Here goes my quiz:
– We all have had a very hard time because of the Covid pandemic. How did the pandemic affect you?
Very difficult like everybody else, my mother was very ill. My mother was dying, so it was extremely difficult and I was lucky that I got to see her in the end before she passed away. So I was very lucky, some people didn’t get to do that. What an intro to an interview!
– The pandemic stopped the plans of many artists. Live shows are one of your strengths, how did you get over not being able to play live?
Normally I would have gone straight into releasing my album and going on tour but I couldn’t do that so I do things that I wouldn’t have. I got really busy, maybe too busy, I threw myself into projects: I released a poetry book (A Lick and a Promise) which I’ve been writing for some time, I worked in all the artwork and I made a documentary about literature and music on Ireland which recently won a big award, which was great, called Voices of Ireland. I filmed the movie ”Fisherman’s friends: one and all” in Cornwall with James Purefoy and that’s going to be released in September. Yeah, I Worked on my album, mixing up and did some videos and planned to tour. So, I was very, very busy.
I was lucky I had a creative outlet because my creativity doesn’t stop so I needed to focus my creative energy.
– How do you see the music business now that we are finally seeing the daylight?
I think the music business is in a in a mess. A lot of places have closed. It’s on its knees at the moment and so many artists who have kept going and now we’re all out on the road at the same time as everywhere was full with everybody trying to get everyone to go to the gigs because we’ve missed it so much. Everybody jumped at the chance to go on tour so it’s a little crazy. Hopefully it will balance itself out again but it’s a bit manic at the moment, I think. Yeah, but it’s good that we’re back.
– Will there be an Imelda May post-pandemic album?
There will be another album, yes, but it won’t be about the pandemic, I don’t want to write about it. It will be the focus of my life and I don’t know what about the next album will be. I’m not writing it at this moment. I’m just continuously writing but not necessarily for an album.
– I admit it, in the hardest moments, music was my life jacket. When you record a song, are you aware of the impact your music can have on the audience?
I don’t record a song thinking of others. I can’t make music for the people because it’ll never please everybody and then it will be too many questions and doubts. Maybe for me I have to get a focused mind, you know, an excited mind as well and make it for myself in a selfish way. I feel what I want to feel, say what I want to say and to be honest with it and truthful. I think that’s the way that things connect to people because if I’m willing to give a lot of myself then I think people feel things more and it connects with other people’s, with their own truth and their own lives and their own story.
– What the fans should expect from this tour? Will we hear new songs?
Yes, you will hear new songs. You’ll hear most of the new album because I have been waiting to perform this live for so long and normally put out an album and go on tour at the same time so this in a year the distance. So I cannot wait to play these new songs live and so far people have received them very well. I want people to go home with joy in their hearts. I want you to feel amazing and feel love and feel all the emotions and I will take you on a journey through this gig. I play songs from old albums so that you can connect to them and sing to the skies. I want you to go home and feel like you’re walking on a cloud, you know, all the way home. So, they should expect lots of big emotions and huge joy.
– Do you like to be on tour for months?
I like to travel on move my gig around from place to place, there is something wonderful about that it feels like I’ve joined the service you know we set up the stage in every venue and at the end of the night it gets taken down put in the trucks and we had off again so there’s something amazing about that. As a child I wanted to join the circus, this is my musical version of that. There’s something lovely about heading out and staying out, when you bring what you need and you make do with what you have living out of a suitcase and stuff but you have to come home. Otherwise you go crazy and you need a reality cheque. On the road you live into a tour bubble. You live with the people you’re working with for months and so you need obviously your families. You work it out with our children join us on the road. Of course, my daughter joins me and then I made time to come home and to make it work of course. And she loves it and we get to see the world, but you need reality and you need to go home, normality and calm. So balance is the best thing.
-What is the most exciting thing about living on the road?
Music. Being together and bringing music to people, that’s the excitement.
– I know it can be a complicated question. What are your 5 favorite singers?
Yes, that is a complicated question. I have so many favourite singers for all different reasons that it’s difficult to pick five. Billie Holiday was a very early influence on me for her minimalism. And then Aretha Franklin for the opposite. Janis Joplin which, you know, teach me how to feel it and shouted and screeches and …you know. Luke Kelly would teach me how to feel it and connect people and sing. He was a wonderful Irish singer, is legendary and moves me so much every time I hear him. Who else… oh, God, is just too many, my mind is spinning. It’s a a crazy amount of wonderful players. Ella Fitzgerald was another, Jeff Buckley, Joe Cocker, Maria Callas who I listen too often, Judy garland. I mean there’s so many, I could be here all night.
– What are your favourite movies about the world of rock? OK, I tell you mine: Phantom of Paradise (1974) by Brian De Palma
Oh, God, I don’t know. Spinal Tap, it has to be my favourite movie with the word rockets more truthful than you ever imagined, what’s so funny. There’s so many amazing movies and Phantom of paradise is fantastic. Every David Lynch movie is phenomenal. And every Pedro Almodovar movie, is one of my favourite directors. His movies aren’t just about music by the way but inspired my music and the vision is just beautiful and the colour is in the way storytelling .
– If there is anything left for you to say, this is the time…
I think I’ve said more than enough and everything else I will say through my music and my poetry and on the gigs. So I shall see you at the gigs and I cannot wait for us all to be together again. and I love being in Spain so it’s a beautiful combination for me. See you soon, adiós.
