I’m Chris Cacavas and I’m one of the founding members of the “Paisley Underground” band Green On Red. Aside from my singer / songwriter solo career I’ve played with Giant Sand and The Dream Syndicate and I’ve done keyboard session work with countless other artists. I’ve been collecting vinyl for as long as I can remember and have done some dj gigs as well. At the moment I’m writing songs for a record I hope to make before the end of this year, 2022. Otherwise, I’m recording beat oriented, instrumental music under the name ‘Chromo Valdez’ which I release on Bandcamp.

ENTREVISTA A CHRIS CACAVAS

¿Tu primer disco comprado?

What is your first album bought?

The Doors “Absolutely Live”

¿Dónde y cómo?

How and where?

It was the first record I bought with my own money. I must have been 12 or 13 years old. I found the double vinyl in a cutout bin at Woolworths in Tucson, Arizona and I paid $2.00 for it.

What album is your «guilty pleasure»?

Hmm, I don’t really have the guilt association with listening to music because I listen to so many genres and find joy in everything from punk, to pop, to disco, funk, country, hip hop etcetera. I think some folks would be surprised to hear I’m a massive Daft Punk fan.

Your last purchase?

A few years ago when I was on tour in Italy with The Dream Syndicate we were invited to the warehouse of Audioglobe and I picked up some funk / soul reissues. Of the four my favorite is Tutt Band from Phoenix, Arizona. Hard 80s funkiness, beats along the line of Cameo. A great and obscure record!

Your favorite album to cheer you up?

That’s really difficult to say. The first one that comes to mind is “Black Bach” by Lamont Dozier.

Your album when you are nostalgic?

Anything by Alice Cooper.

Cualquier cosa de Alice  Cooper.

¿Qué sonaría en tu funeral?

What would sound at your funeral?

I think it would be cool if there was a dj playing at my funeral but one song that comes to mind is The Flaming Lips «Do You Realize?»

Creo que sería genial si hubiera un DJ tocando en mi funeral, pero una canción que me viene a la mente es «Do You Realize?» de The Flaming Lips.

¿Tu banda sonora favorita?

Your favorite soundtrack?

I love the soundtrack of “The Missouri Breaks” by John Williams which I don’t have on vinyl yet. Other than that “Three Tough Guys” by Isaac Hayes is pretty good.

Where do you listen to the most music?

Everywhere to be honest – in the kitchen, the living room, in the car but mostly in my bedroom where my turntable and speakers are.

What is the record you have heard the most during the pandemic, or to resist confinement?

The band I’ve heard the most in the last 2 years has to be IDLES. The record I’ve heard the most? Hard to say, nothing has stayed on repeat for too long. Lamont Dozier, Herbie Hancock, Graham Central Station, Kleeer, LCD Soundsystem, Betty Davis, Isley Brothers, Rufus Thomas, Edwin Starr, Brick, Little Milton, Taj Mahal, Jimmy McGriff, De La Soul, Johnny Hammond, Bar-Kays, Chic have all spent some time on the turntable.

10 albums that you would never part with and why?

Richard «Popcorn» Wylie – “Extrasensory Perception”

I can’t remember where I picked up this record. I’d never heard of the artist before and I bought it because I liked the cover. I brought it home and played it and was rather disappointed and didn’t listen to it again. A few years later I decided to give it another listen and I was blown away! Very polished and produced funky R & B with great songs and singing. It might also be one of the more valuable records in my collection.

Lamont Dozier – “Black Bach”

In Los Angeles I worked in the film industry as a production assistant and spent a lot of my time driving a rented truck across town to pick up this or that. On one of my runs I found myself in the San Fernando valley very near to one of my favorite junk / thrift store. I decided to stop in and have a look and on a shelf I found an old, filthy suitcase. The suitcase was from the 1940s or 1950s and looked like something I wanted to have. When I pulled it off of the shelf I noticed there was something inside and when I opened it up there were about 10 lp’s inside. There were a few from Dozier including a test pressing wrapped in shiny gold “Christmas” paper with a handwritten note to friends of his. “Black Bach” was also inside and has become one of my all time favorites.

Patrick Hernandez – “Born To Be Alive”

Before we were Green On Red we were “Serfers” in Tucson, Arizona and the entire band lived under one roof for a period of time. We were for the most part unemployed and our days consisted of rehearsing, playing gigs, partying and sleeping. You can imagine the house of 4 under 20 year old rockers could get pretty messy.. well, once every 2 weeks or so we’d put this song on the turntable and do our team effort, whirlwind cleaning as we were dancing the whole time! Lots of good memories so yeah, this one’s a keeper.

Tutt Band – “Tutt Band”

This was the surprise standout record from the four “never heard before” records I picked up in the Audioglobe warehouse in Italy. This was another I bought based on the cover art alone.

Jackie Mittoo – “In Cold Blood”

I picked up this record in near mint condition at a flea market in a small village in Germany. I was super surprised to see it amongst a bunch of German “schlager” music and God knows what else. This record was also my introduction to Jackie Mittoo.

Green On Red – “Two Bibles”

The very first record we recorded and released ourselves with art work that Jack Waterson dug out of a trash dumpster. There were only 500 copies printed and I have 2, one of which is not in very good condition.

Wipers – “Over The Edge”

When I moved to Germany around 2001 I put together a trio and the drummer was surprised I had never heard Greg Sage and Wipers. He lent me this record which is really, really good. If I part with this it will only be to give it back to “Willi” who loaned it to me.

Claw Hammer – “Brother Brick Says….”

This single from an L.A. band I knew is one of the greatest, raw, urgent, live sounding recordings I’ve ever heard! The singer was a massive Captain Beefheart fan which sin’t the first thing you’d notice when you hear the band. I once saw them play in a bowling alley in Eaglerock, a neighborhood of Northeast Los Angeles, and their show was stopped after 20 minutes because there was a gang fight outside where someone got stabbed and the police showed up and shut the gig down. Claw Hammer’s 20 minute set is in my top 5 of greatest live shows ever.

Ramsey Lewis – “Don’t It Feel Good”

This was another thrift shop discovery. Although I was familiar with Ramsey Lewis I’d never heard this venture into funk. This was the beginning of me searching for jazz artists exploring funk grooves and there are some really great tracks on here. As you can tell, most of these records have a sentimental attachment that has to do with the time and place I acquired the record.

The Dream Syndicate – “How Did I Find Myself Here”

I’ve been collaborating with the founder / leader of The Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn, for decades and I was very excited when he invited me to join them in Richmond, Virginia to make this “30 years later” reunion record. A lot of amazing tracks, fantastic playing from everyone involved and it’s a memento from one of my favorite recording sessions ever.

Lamont Dozier – «Bach negro»

Patrick Hernández – «Born to Be Alive»

! Muchos buenos recuerdos.

Banda Tutt – «Banda Tutt»

Jackie Mittoo – «In a Cold Blood»

Green on Red – «Two Bibles»

Wipers – «Over The Edge»

Claw Hammer – «Brother Brick Says…»

Ramsey Lewis – «Don’t It Feel Good»

The Dream Syndicate – «How Did I Find Myself Here?»
